Historical Background to The Other Side of the Lantern
The Russo-Japanese War
He and his wife arrived in Asia just as the Russo-Japanese war broke out. In Hong Kong, Sir Frederick met Russian survivors of the invasion of Chemulpo (Inchon), an encounter he describes in the China section of The Other Side of the Lantern (1905).
