The company was founded by editor Jacqueline Young, in association with editorial consultant Katherine Meredith. Both are former long-term residents of Hong Kong. Jacqueline holds a PhD from Glasgow University; her thesis was on nineteenth-century expatriate fiction about China, and included research into authors Mrs Archibald Little, Paul and Veronica King, 'Putnam Weale' (Bertram Lenox Simpson), and Charles Welsh Mason.
